The twin builder’s workflow
Build accurate, data-rich digital twins, quickly. Tailor them to the unique needs of your clients and simplify the handover process. Give them everything they’ll ever want—all in one place.
Create powerful visualizations of all data
Deliver a digital twin in Tandem and empower your clients to easily interpret their operational data. With the context of the robust 3D twin viewing and supporting charts and heatmaps, data insights are instantly visible. Organize, customize, and pre-load their twin with curated data visualizations and—from day one—your clients can focus on the datasets most relevant to their business needs.
Expedite twin building with templates
Once you’ve created your first twin, you’ll never be starting from scratch again. Simply add your IFC and Revit files to Tandem and leverage our Facility Templates, Classifications, and Parameters features to easily integrate and structure all data and documentation. From start to finish, building a digital twin is a streamlined, repeatable process.
Provide your clients with maps to their asset
Tandem automatically maps relationships between spaces and systems. This once time-consuming, manual process can now be completed in just a few clicks. Give your clients a clear 3D visualization of how their systems are connected and how they service different spaces by merging architectural, structural, and MEP models. So, if the HVAC goes wrong, they’ll know exactly where to go to inspect the issue.
Connect data from a variety of sources
Once your building’s systems are in the twin, adding your client’s IoT and BMS systems—like occupancy sensors—is another simple step. Tandem Connect simplifies the integration of IoT data while, for Microsoft Azure users, you won’t even need to code. Equally, if you want to create more bespoke APIs to fit your ideal workflow, you can utilize Tandem Data APIs.
Stay on schedule with simple progress boards
Ensure every digital twin you build meets your contractual obligations with customizable data dashboards. Easily track and review progress to check that all asset data gets populated accurately. Dashboards will isolate missing data for you, so you can quickly see what’s left to do. With every detail at your fingertips, you’ll stick to the project timeline.
Transfer ownership in no time
Once the digital twin is built and verified, Tandem makes the handover process fast and easy. Transferring the digital twin of your client’s facility when you give them the keys will ensure they have access to all asset and operational data from day one. You’ll even get a ‘transferred facility’ receipt for extra peace of mind.
The twin operator’s workflow
Gain an in-depth understanding of how your facility runs and how you can optimize operations. Access near real-time data for all your systems, establish trends, and act on those insights.
Make informed decisions with 3D visualizations
Effortlessly translate your operational data into powerful insights. Review the data alongside the 3D digital replica of your building and get the context to instantly understand what’s what. With detailed visualizations like heatmaps and charts with thresholds, you can effectively monitor, manage, and optimize your building systems.
Find what you need, when you need it
Save yourself from the laborious task of sifting through heaps of paperwork. With Tandem, you’ll never lose a document again. Search and filter data to access the right information, in seconds. Whether you’re looking across the whole building or focusing on a specific floor’s systems, you’ll have the tools to digest the data in a meaningful way. You can even revisit refined datasets by curating your workspace and bookmarking those valuable 3D visualizations.
Create one hub for all operations
Everything is connected in your digital twin, so you can look holistically at your data or take a deep dive. Review near real-time data from your IoT sensors against your building systems to understand how your facility is performing and being used by its occupants. Identify optimization opportunities with the Streams and Charts features and make well-informed decisions that don’t just benefit your bottom line but also the planet.
Understand what’s behind your walls in a few clicks
It’s never been easier to see how all your systems are connected and work together. Map out your systems in just a few clicks and see them within the context of the whole facility. Build a better spatial awareness of each asset and understand exactly where the critical components sit within the space. So, if anything goes wrong with your MEP system, you’ll be able to pinpoint it to a level and room, effortlessly.
Access an in-depth index of your assets
With Tandem, every asset is itemized. Get the best of both worlds with comprehensive Stacked Charts supporting your 3D digital replica. Interact with your facility data whenever you need to and quickly drill down into the specifics with filters. The Inventory feature bulk imports, easy editing, and simple navigation.
Run operations smoothly from day one
With the click of a button, your twin builder will hand over ownership of the digital twin they’ve built for you. Just like that, you’ll have the data-rich model at your fingertips. From historic time-series data, to near real-time updates, you’ll be able to make informed decisions.

Your FAQs
If you have any questions about Autodesk Tandem or digital twin technology in general, you should find the answers here. If you need more information, reach out to our team.
A stream of data points from a physical device or sensor in Autodesk Tandem. The data points are recorded in time-series at a defined frequency and stored for a retention period.
A valuable object (asset, space, or system) that is part of a digital twin in Autodesk Tandem. These objects are tagged with a user defined a classification code and augmented with additional data.
Yes, this IoT-type integration is under consideration for the longer term.
We currently support Revit 2017 and later. We are utilizing the Forge Data Pipeline to ingest design data and over time will support other Autodesk formats and open formats such as IFC and other formats. Specific formats and timing will be driven by customer input.
As an owner or operator of a facility, you’ll begin by working with your AEC project delivery teams to define your desired outcomes for the digital twin. With your data requirements in place, the process of building it begins. Once the twin’s BIM data has been captured and validated, the IoT data from your physical asset’s systems will be connected and you’ll have access to this dynamic, data-rich model from day one of operations. As time goes by, your digital twin will hold more valuable data and through exploratory analysis, you’ll be able to draw conclusions on how to optimize operations and cut costs for the facility.
Building a digital twin is a collaborative project which happens in tandem with the development of the real-world asset. The key stakeholders for building it will be architects, engineers, construction workers, the facility owner, and operations team. Leveraging BIM (building information modeling) data, everyone contributes to the same model. Once the virtual replica is complete, its systems, spaces, and assets are then connected to the relevant IoT data from the physical asset. A digital twin is only as good as its data. The more mature and accurate the BIM data is, the more valuable the digital twin’s insights will be.
